What’s so special
The Seiko 6309-7049, commonly known as the “Turtle,” is a vintage automatic day/date dive watch that has gained a cult following among watch enthusiasts. Produced by Seiko, a renowned Japanese watchmaker, this model was part of the brand’s diver’s watch lineup and was introduced in the late 1970s. The watch gets its nickname “Turtle” due to its distinctive cushion-shaped case, which resembles the shell of a turtle. As a dive watch, the Seiko 6309-7049 boasts a good level of water resistance, suitable for recreational diving activities. The specific water resistance rating may vary, but it is generally rated for depths of around 150 meters (approximately 500 feet).
The watch features a simple and legible dial design with large, luminescent markers and hands for easy readability in low-light conditions. The day and date complications are displayed at the 3 o’clock position. The Seiko 6309-7049 is powered by the Seiko Caliber 6309 automatic movement. This movement is known for its reliability and robustness, ease of servicing, and accuracy. The watch is equipped with a bi-directional rotating bezel that allows divers to track elapsed time underwater.
Over time, the Seiko 6309-7049 has become highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, contributing to its vintage appeal. Its robust construction and timeless design have helped it maintain popularity in the secondary market. It’s worth noting that due to the age of the Seiko 6309-7049, finding one in good condition and with original components can be challenging. Collectors often appreciate these watches for their historical significance and as examples of Seiko’s expertise in dive watch manufacturing.
About this example
This Seiko 6309-7049 Turtle comes to you on the original Seiko rubber strap, freshly serviced, and showing excellent timekeeping. All parts appear to be original to the best of our knowledge excluding the crystal which was replaced during our service of the watch. Timekeeping is excellent, and all functions work. The bezel has faded to a wonderful “ghost” dark blue. Overall condition is well patinaed, but the watch presents very attractively and is an excellent example of a vintage Seiko Turtle.
