What’s so special
The Omega Speedmaster is undeniably known as the “moon watch”. Did you know that the first automatic chronograph in space was a Seiko? That’s right, Astronaut Colonel William Pogue ditched his standard issue Omega for a variation of this Seiko chronograph on his 1973 Skylab missions. In addition, Albert François Cevert Goldenberg was famous for wearing a variation of the Seiko 6139-6009 automatic chronograph in early 1970s Formula 1. This reference features the very rare notch case at the 3 o’clock crown position that’s highly sought after and collectable as it’s rumorred to be the reference worn by F1 driver himself.
The 6139 movement truly is an incredible bit of kit and far underrated. These were miles ahead of Swiss chronographs at the time. Seiko masterfully accomplished the same functionality in half the parts. In addition to being an incredible chronograph the Seiko 6139 movement features Seiko’s patented magic lever automatic works. This creates a highly efficient and reliable automatic winding in a very slim package. The slim height, unique case profile, and tapered bracelet result in a 41mm chronograph that wears incredibly well.
If that wasn’t enough, the 6139 is a vertical clutch column wheel chronograph! This enables perfect chronograph action every time without a stuttering start/stop action you find on Swiss horizontal clutch designs.
